Open Garden Day Sunday 16th July 2017
Growing forward with The Organic Centre is the theme for this year’s
Open Garden Day Sunday 16th July 2017 from 11am -5pm.
Every garden can be run organically, from the smallest to the largest, whatever the location and everyone young and old can grow organic vegetables, fruit, herbs and flowers. Growing organically produces healthy nutritious food and on our Garden Day we want to encourage everyone to garden organically and we will show how to do it successfully.
Walks, talks and displays will deal with soil fertility and composting, rotation, seed sowing, growing under cover in polytunnels, growing herbs and fruit, slug control, companion planting, pest and disease control and green manures. Staff and students of the centre will be on hand during the day to give advice. Watch out for our seed and compost games and join sessions on Yoga for Gardeners.
We are very ha[y to announce that our friends at The Irish Seed Savers will make a special appearance on the day!
We all can make a difference through gardening!
Modern agriculture is stripping the Earth of high-quality topsoil, “the skin of the Earth,” and the depletion throughout history of these few inches has led to the collapse of civilizations, but all of us can take part in restoring healthy topsoil and therefore what we do in our own backyard has an impact on the larger world.
Urban farming, community gardens and orchards, school gardens, the Grow-It-Yourself and Edible City movements and everybody who grows some food, can have a powerful positive impact on our planet.
Our eco-shop and The Grass Roof Café will be open throughout the day. There will also be stalls by The Irish Seed Savers Association and the Leitrim Tourism Network.
