The new Level 5 FETAC accredited course in horticulture here at The Organic Centre is set to commence in February 2017. It is fully funded by MSLETB (Mayo, Sligo, Leitrim Educational training Board) formally FAS.
The course lasts 52 weeks – in tune with the growing season – and is full time, Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.
Trainees are expected to attend daily and are taught in a variety of ways including practical training in the garden, orchard and polytunnels, classroom sessions, demonstrations and guided walks.
There are 9 minor award modules and a pass in all 9 leads to the Major Award in Horticulture.
The 9 modules are Work Practice, Plant Protection, Plant Science, Plant Identification and Use, Soil Science and Growing Media, Team Working, Organic Production, Organic Principles and Standards and Fruit and Vegetable Production.
The modules are assessed by written assignments, practical demonstrations and written examinations.
Selection for the 15 places is by interview in February from a list supplied by MSLETB, Ballytivnan, Sligo.
