Lough Melvin

The Organic Centre is situated on the south western shore of Lough Melvin, nestled into the Rossinver hills.

Lough Melvin, located on the border between Co. Leitrim and Co. Fermanagh is a lake internationally renowned for its unique range of plants and animals and is famous as one of Ireland best angling loughs.

Offering the chance of Salmon from February until September, the lake is also home to three species of fish unique to Lough Melvin; the Gillaroo Trout, the Sonaghan Trout and the Ferox Trout, which are of particular interest to anglers not least because they are still available in great numbers. Char, Perch and Grilse are also fished for.

A post-glacial lough

Melvin remains today one of the few examples of a post-glacial lough and is still in a relatively pristine condition.

It is also considered a ‘Nature Reserve’ and ‘Site of Special Scientific Interest’ in Northern Ireland and an ‘Area of Outstanding Beauty’ and also an ‘Area of High Visual Amenity’ in the Republic of Ireland.

On the northern shore of the lough, just outside the village of Kinlough is an eco-park created by The Organic Centre as an Organic Centre Plus project. It is a perfect place to enjoy a picnic with your family with its purpose-built picnic tables, a play area and 17 acres of woodland walks.
